#!/usr/bin/env python3 # -*- coding: utf-8 -*- """ diffusion-limited-growth.py Science Journaling Club, Volume 1 Issue 4, Summer 2025, "Patterns That Make Themselves". THE QUESTION ------------ Stick particles together one at a time, each one arriving by a random walk from far away, and the thing that grows is a branched, feathery structure that looks like frost on a window, like a manganese dendrite in a limestone joint, like copper plated out of solution at low current. Does that structure have a well defined fractal dimension? Do two independent ways of measuring that dimension agree with each other? And does the answer match the value the literature reports for the same model, and for the physical systems people claim the model describes? WHAT THIS PROGRAM IS -------------------- A computation, not an observation. The club has no laboratory, no electrochemical cell, no cold window and no microscope. Nothing in this file was measured in the physical world. Every number printed below comes out of pseudo-random sampling from a lattice model we wrote ourselves, seeded once at the top, so that anybody re-running the file on the same numpy gets exactly these figures back. The Monte Carlo run is the experiment. Where we write "measured" we mean "estimated from our own simulated clusters", the way you would measure the frequency of heads by flipping a coin many times rather than by reasoning about coins. THE MODEL --------- Witten and Sander's diffusion limited aggregation (1981), on a square lattice. 1. One occupied site at the origin: the seed. 2. Release a walker at a uniformly random angle on a circle of radius R_birth = R_max + 5, where R_max is the current farthest occupied site. 3. The walker takes nearest-neighbour steps (up, down, left, right, each with probability 1/4). If the site it tries to step into is occupied, then with probability p_stick the walker freezes where it currently stands and joins the cluster; with probability 1 - p_stick it does not move this step and tries again next step. 4. Repeat from 2 until the cluster has N particles. p_stick = 1 is the original model. Lowering p_stick lets a walker sit next to an arm without committing, so it can wander further in and attach deeper, which fills in the fjords and makes the cluster denser. TWO ACCELERATIONS, BOTH STATED BECAUSE BOTH ARE APPROXIMATIONS -------------------------------------------------------------- Walking one lattice step at a time from the birth circle is unaffordable at N = 50,000. We use the two standard accelerations, and we test both. (a) FREE-SPACE JUMPS. We keep three coarse occupancy maps, at block sizes 8, 32 and 128 lattice units, each one dilated by a single block in every direction. If the walker's block is clear at the 128 level then no occupied site lies within 128 lattice units, so we replace the next few thousand single steps with one jump of length 128 in a uniformly random direction, rounded to the lattice. Same at 32 and at 8. For a continuum Brownian walker that jump is exact, because the first exit point from a disc is uniform on its boundary. For a lattice walker it is an approximation whose error decays like 1/d, and d is never smaller than 8. Section 7 measures the size of that error by re-running small clusters with all jumps switched off (Section 7). (b) EXACT REINJECTION INSTEAD OF A KILL RADIUS. A two dimensional random walk is recurrent, so a walker that strays outside the birth circle returns with probability one, and throwing it away would bias the growth toward the side it left from. Instead, when a walker sits at radius r > R_birth and angle phi, we place it directly at its first return to the birth circle. The angular displacement of that return has the Poisson-kernel density f(D) = (1/2pi) (r^2 - Rb^2) / (r^2 + Rb^2 - 2 r Rb cos D), which is a wrapped Cauchy distribution with parameter rho = Rb / r, and is sampled in closed form by D = 2 arctan( ((1-rho)/(1+rho)) tan(pi (U - 1/2)) ) for U uniform on (0,1). Again exact in the continuum, an approximation on the lattice, and again only ever applied at distances of at least R_birth. WHAT WE MEASURE, AND HOW ------------------------ RADIUS OF GYRATION SCALING. As the cluster grows we record, at log-spaced particle counts, the radius of gyration about the centre of mass, Rg^2 = <|r - r_com|^2>. For a mass fractal, N ~ Rg^D, so ln Rg = (1/D) ln N + const. We fit that line by ordinary least squares over a fitting window well inside the cluster, and take D = 1 / slope. BOX COUNTING. On the finished cluster we lay square boxes of side eps over the occupied sites and count how many boxes contain at least one particle. For a fractal, N_box ~ eps^(-D). We average the count over 8 random offsets of the box grid so the answer does not depend on where the grid happens to land, and fit ln N_box against ln eps. These two are independent in the sense that matters: one uses the whole growth history and only the second moment of the mass distribution, the other uses only the final snapshot and only its coverage at each scale. They are not independent in the sense of using different clusters. They are computed from the same runs. WHAT WE COMPARE AGAINST ----------------------- The accepted fractal dimension of two dimensional DLA, D = 1.71. Witten and Sander's original paper reported 1.70 +/- 0.06 from clusters of a few thousand particles. The best modern off-lattice estimates cluster around 1.711 to 1.715. There is no exact analytic value; 1.71 is an empirical consensus. The one closed analytic expression on offer is the mean-field result of Muthukumar (1983) and of Tokuyama and Kawasaki (1984), D = (d^2 + 1)/(d + 1), which gives exactly 5/3 = 1.6667 in two dimensions. It is printed alongside because it is close enough to the truth to be quoted in the early literature and wrong enough to be a useful second target to miss. ASSUMPTIONS, STATED PLAINLY --------------------------- * Square lattice, four neighbours. Real frost and real electrodeposits have no square lattice imposed from outside, and on-lattice DLA is known to develop a four-fold anisotropy that grows with cluster size. * One particle at a time, released only after the previous one has stuck. There is no finite concentration of walkers, no screening between simultaneous walkers, no depletion of the surrounding solution. * The sticking rule is irreversible. Nothing ever detaches, rearranges, or diffuses along the surface once attached. * The walker is a point on the lattice. No particle size, no particle shape, no rotation, no hydrodynamics, no gravity, no convection. * No surface tension and no crystalline surface energy. Real dendrites have both and both set a length scale that DLA does not have. * No noise reduction, no anisotropic sticking, no temperature. * The medium is infinite and uniform, approximated by the birth circle plus exact reinjection. LIMITATIONS ----------- This model cannot tell you what frost is. It can tell you what a family of growth processes have in common once everything else is stripped away, which is that a moving boundary fed by a diffusing field is unstable, that the instability screens itself, and that the screening leaves a scale-free branched object behind. Every physical system this article mentions violates at least three of the assumptions above. Agreement between the model's dimension and a real deposit's measured dimension is evidence that screening dominates. It is not evidence that the rest of the physics is absent. Any single cluster is one sample. Fractal dimensions measured on finite clusters carry corrections to scaling that die away slowly, and the fitting window is a choice made by the person doing the fitting. We print local slopes as well as fitted values so the reader can see how much that choice moves the answer.
