THE QUESTION ------------ Simulating gravity is one equation, F = -GMm r_hat / r^2, applied over and over. Every N-body code, every orbital mechanics course, every planetarium simulation reduces to picking a rule for turning today's position and velocity into tomorrow's, and then applying that rule millions of times. Choose the wrong rule and a perfectly good orbit can gain or lose energy for reasons that have nothing to do with gravity and everything to do with arithmetic. This program measures how bad that gets, which of three standard stepping rules avoids it, and what it costs in compute to avoid it. WHAT THIS PROGRAM IS --------------------- This is a computation, not an observation. Nothing here was pointed at the sky. The club has no telescope. Every "orbit" below is the trajectory of a single point mass under a 1/r^2 central force in flat, unperturbed two-body Kepler gravity, produced entirely by code written and run on this machine. Where the text below says "the planet" it means the numerical trajectory; the physics is a textbook two-body problem chosen because it has a known, closed-form answer to check the code against, not because it is a novel physical claim. THE MODEL --------- Units are chosen so GM = 1 and the semi-major axis a = 1, which makes the orbital period exactly T = 2*pi. Motion is confined to a plane (the exact solution stays there, since the force is central; any drift out of the plane in a numerical run would itself be a bug, and none occurred). State is (x, y, vx, vy). Acceleration is a(x,y) = -(x,y) / r^3, r = sqrt(x^2+y^2). Three stepping rules integrate the same initial condition, an orbit of eccentricity e starting at perihelion: 1. Forward (explicit) Euler -- first order, not symplectic 2. Velocity Verlet, kick-drift-kick form -- second order, symplectic (algebraically identical to leapfrog for a velocity-independent force; the kick-drift-kick form is used because it makes the angular-momentum argument in Validation C exact rather than merely numerical) 3. Classical fourth-order Runge-Kutta (RK4) -- fourth order, not symplectic "Symplectic" means the discrete map preserves phase-space volume exactly; it is why Verlet's energy error stays bounded instead of drifting away. Neither Euler nor RK4 has that property, though RK4's much smaller local error makes its own drift far slower than Euler's. Computational cost is charged in force evaluations, the dominant cost of every step: Euler and velocity Verlet spend exactly one per step (Verlet reuses the acceleration computed at the end of the previous step as the start of the next kick); RK4 spends four. Comparing methods at "matched cost" means giving Euler and Verlet four times as many steps (a timestep four times smaller) as RK4 for the same total number of force evaluations, the fair comparison for a fixed compute budget rather than a fixed timestep. The two-body Kepler problem has an exact solution via Kepler's equation, M = E - e sin(E) (M the mean anomaly, E the eccentric anomaly), solved here by Newton's method. Every numerical trajectory is checked against this closed form, never against another numerical run. ASSUMPTIONS AND LIMITS, STATED PLAINLY --------------------------------------- - Two bodies only, one of them fixed at the origin (equivalently, one body of negligible mass orbiting a fixed point mass). No third body, no relativistic precession, no oblateness, no drag. Real solar-system integrators face all of these; none is present here on purpose, because the question is about the integrator, not the physics it is asked to carry. - Fixed timestep throughout. Adaptive-step and higher-order symplectic (Yoshida-type) integrators are not tested; they would change some of these numbers, and where that matters is said explicitly in the article. - "Energy" and "angular momentum" are the specific-orbit quantities per unit reduced mass, E = v^2/2 - GM/r and L = x*vy - y*vx, conserved exactly by the true continuous-time dynamics. - The Monte Carlo component (Section 5) draws eccentricity uniformly at random per trial to see whether the convergence-order measurement is stable across orbit shapes, not because any single orbit's shape is uncertain. - All floating-point arithmetic is IEEE double precision. Roundoff sets a floor on every "error" reported below at roughly 1e-14 to 1e-16 relative; numbers at that floor are reported as floor, not as remaining physical signal. Master seed: 20260901.
