Our own work

Quarterly issues

Every term the club finishes a few pieces of work and collects them into an issue. Each one opens with a short note on what the studies had in common. We do not have a laboratory, so this is analysis and modelling work, and the code that produced every number is linked from the article that used it.

  1. Volume 3, Issue 1September 2026

    Fall 2026

Numerical integrators that quietly lie about a planet's orbit and the two Lagrange points that are stable for a genuinely strange reason, next to a moth that steers by the Milky Way, a journal-editor fraud ring caught by its own citation pattern, and a cat-sleeping-position claim that didn't survive a second look.

  2. Volume 2, Issue 4June 2026

    Summer 2026

A meta-analysis of the long-term field trials behind farmland carbon claims, next to the real origin of the 10,000-steps target, ancient DNA pulled from a Roman fish-sauce vat, and the dental plaque that finally gave the Denisovans a face.

  3. Volume 2, Issue 3March 2026

    Spring 2026

Two reviews asking what the evidence actually supports rather than what the headline said, plus a dinosaur decline that turns out to track exposed rock rather than dinosaurs, eighty-one cubic kilometres of groundwater nobody had counted, and a mantle plume whose rhythm is set by the plates above it.

  4. Volume 2, Issue 2December 2025

    Winter 2026

Old evidence, read carefully, alongside two animals caught doing something nobody had recorded before: a bat killing and eating a bird entirely in flight, and killer whales manufacturing their own grooming tools out of kelp.

  5. Volume 2, Issue 1September 2025

    Fall 2025

Two changes at planetary scale that almost nobody noticed, next to a sea slug that keeps stolen chloroplasts running for months, a 99-million-year-old wasp with a trap no living insect inherited, and the phase transition hiding in a plate of cacio e pepe.

  6. Volume 1, Issue 4June 2025

    Summer 2025

Organisms doing things they are not supposed to be able to do, plus a boiled egg that secretly wants two different temperatures at once and what a trained nose can tell you about a body three thousand years dead.

  7. Volume 1, Issue 3March 2025

    Spring 2025

Three pieces of earth science that each break a rule somebody teaches. Gold leaking out of a core that was supposed to be sealed, younger rock sitting underneath older rock across half a basin, and the first video anybody has taken of a fault tearing the ground apart.

  8. Volume 1, Issue 2December 2024

    Winter 2025

Things spreading through a lattice, a network, a coastline and a forest, next to the solid iron ball two thousand kilometres beneath our feet and a compound built from 0.3 milligrams of an element that was decaying while chemists worked with it.

  9. Volume 1, Issue 1September 2024

    Fall 2024

Chance is the subject. What randomness does to a beneficial mutation, to a small population's odds of lasting the century, and to a survey that comes back empty. It closes on a meta-analysis of the insect decline literature, which turns out to disagree with itself more than either side admits.

Articles per issue, Fall 2024 to Fall 2026

Each column is one issue. Research pieces are the club's own analyses, each with its code; field notes build on someone else's published result.

Article types by issue

Each row is a type of article and each column an issue, oldest on the left. A darker cell holds more pieces; an empty row is a type the club has not published yet.
